In a recent budget announcement, the government of Canada extended work permits for international students, which meansthat overseas students in Canada will now be able to work longer and gain experience. The rule applies to students whose work permits will expire between January and December 2022. These students are eligible to apply for additional open work, which will remain valid for up to 18 months.

Thousands of students globally choose a study abroad Canada option for a rewarding career. Canada experienced a full economic recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic, but thousands of job vacancies are waiting to be filled. Canada plans to extend the work permits for those whose work permits have expired or will expire in 2022.To address the labor shortages. Currently, Canada has 900,000 job vacancies that need skilled and qualified workers.

In a statement by immigration minister Sean Fraser, “with the economy growing faster than employers can hire new workers, Canada needs to look at every option to have the skills and labor needed to fuel our growth.”

Measures like this will also help various sectors in Canada to boom while addressing their needs across the country. The policy promises more job opportunities for recent international students and reasons to make Canada their home.

This temporary measure is welcomed by many leading Canadian universities as they recognize the valuable contribution made by international students after completing their studies. These students also provide the country a pool of talented workers, and are a critical source of revenue and growth.

The government projects that around 95,000 post-graduation work permits will expire between January and December 2022, and approximately 50,000 applicants will benefit from this temporary measure.

In a statement by IRCC, the work permit extension will be a welcoming move for applicants who wish tocontribute to Canada’s economic prosperity while also addressing its labor shortage and gaining work experience that will help them in their permanent residency application.

The extension policy will be effective in “summer 2022” and as per IRCC, it is looking for a streamlined, quick process to implement it. IRCC will release more details in the coming weeks.

Apart from this, the government of Canada also announced to resume express entry draws for FSW and CEC candidates in early July 2022.
